Corian vs Quartz Countertops

This is a common question we get regarding the best countertop material as an alternative to granite. Granite is often a standard material that builders have commonly used in the past, so when looking to upgrade during a remodel clients often are torn between which is the best alternative.

The bottom line up front is that in terms of durability, quartz is the superior option. The most important characteristic the majority of clients are looking for is lowest maintenance and highest durability. Quartz is considered a non-porous material (though at a micro level all things are porous to some degree) and is much less susceptible to heat damage. Quartz is also lowest maintenance that does not require sealing.

Corian has a more speckled appearance, is available in a slightly larger variety of colors/patterns, and can be thermoformed into more complex shapes. It is also more UV resistant and would be better suited to outdoor use compared to quartz. Quartz is made up of about 90% engineered composite stone and resins giving a unique luster. This also makes quartz more heat and stain resistant compared to corian.

Cost between the two is pretty similar with quartz being marginally more expensive at the high end. They are both available in a large selection of colors and patterns and will add a luxurious feel to your home. So unless you are in search of a very specific color or pattern that is only available in corian, we recommend considering quartz countertops for your interior remodel project in most cases.
